Library Journal Review

More than 150 key social issues confronting the United States today are covered in this reasonably priced eight-volume set: from abortion and adoption to capital punishment and corporate crime; from obesity and organized crime to sweatshops and xenophobia. Meant to serve as a one-stop resource for the researcher, the set covers each topic in impressive detail, enriching the already lengthy entries with tables, figures, chronologies, glossaries, and primary source documents. A good buy for libraries catering to students of history and social science.-Mirela Roncevic (c) Copyright 2010. Library Journals LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc. CHOICE Review

This multivolume set provides a rich source of information on social issues in American society; its definition of social issues is broad, including diseases such as cancer and autism as well as the more political issues of terrorism, defense spending, and gun control. The contributing authors of the individual articles are drawn from faculty and scholars across the US. Each signed article provides historical context, background, a summary of the issue, and a discussion of the various viewpoints and controversies. Every article provides references, a glossary, and an excerpt from a primary document. Most articles provide chronology, charts, graphs, and other data. The entries are clear and well written, treating each topic succinctly and at the same time giving full attention to the central concepts of the issue. The final volume is a very thorough index to the entire encyclopedia. This set makes an excellent starting point for undergraduates searching for information on social issues; they will find not only succinct summaries of the concepts, but also some important data and references to pursue for more depth. ^BSumming Up: Recommended.
