Cull's book gives valuable insight into the role of the communications revolution in film, radio, and print media in the formation of the Anglo-American relationship during WW II. The author demonstrates how an informal network between British civil servants and American journalists, which provided "information" to the American public, developed into the systematic dissemination of British propaganda in the US. Unlike German propaganda, which was usually bombastic, British publicity emphasized common Anglo-American interests in a calm tone. The British circumvented both isolationists and antipropaganda laws by using American news agencies and specific American correspondents as conduits for their publicity. Hollywood, in particular, was a major vehicle for British propagandizing and was more effective in presenting the Allied cause than were British films before Pearl Harbor. At a time when President Roosevelt was facing an isolationist Congress, pro-British propaganda was essential in creating pro-British and prointerventionist sentiment among the American public. Well written and impressively researched, the book is a welcome addition to the literature on the "special relationship." Should be read in conjunction with D.
