Library Journal Review

The life story of Joseph Süss Oppenheimer (1698-1738) should be better known, and this well-written and engaging volume by Mintzker (history, Princeton Univ.; The Defortification of the German City, 1689-1866) offers insight into a man known as the "Court Jew" to Charles Alexander, Duke of Württemberg. Upon the duke's death in 1737, Oppenheimer was arrested, tried, and hanged. The charges and evidence against him were conflicting, proving this to be a case of anti-Semitism. Mintzker begins by examining four contemporary accounts of Oppenheimer's experience, including the leading inquisitor and eyewitnesses. Sifting through these sources with differing accounts, Mintzker then views the "evidence" through the lens of polyphonic history. In essence, this path asks historians to "consider the sources." As a result, the author began to question: Who wrote what and for whom? What did these witnesses include or exclude in their accounts? VERDICT This meticulously researched work offers a fascinating and intelligent accounting of Oppenheimer's life that will captivate readers of history and Jewish studies.- Jacqueline Parascandola, Univ. of Virginia © Copyright 2017.
