Library Journal Review

Beginning with the Roosevelt administration, reporter McClendon and her hard-hitting questions have been a regular feature of presidential press conferences. In these memoirs, McClendon intersperses brief vignettes from her personal life with her recollections and assessment of each of the presidents she has covered. Seeing herself as an advocate for "little people," she became widely known for asking difficult and disconcerting questions. Her discussion of Lyndon Johnson, a fellow Texan, reveals how she advised him when rivals were attempting to redirect government projects away from Texas. A Washington press corps institution, McClendon also relates her struggle as a woman journalist in a male-dominated field. This book belongs in journalism collections and in libraries where biographies of journalists are in demand.-Judy Solberg, George Washington Univ. Libs., Washington, D.C. (c) Copyright 2010.
