CHOICE Review

This book collects 12 previously published essays that explore photography through the lens of gender and race. Solomon-Godeau argues, in the essay on Harry Callahan, that "the art of photographic capture is never innocent." Highlights of the volume include analysis of artists such as Cindy Sherman and Robert Mapplethorpe, an interpretation of the Abu Ghraib torture photographs, and a discussion of the dialectic of inside/outside in photographic representation. Parsons's substantial preface contextualizes Solomon-Godeau's work, writing that it demonstrates "that there is still much to be gained from asking questions about culture, gender, and power." Solomon-Godeau's language is often complex and difficult to unpack, yet her observations are striking and her arguments compelling. Her skill at seeing what others do not and sharing her findings with readers makes these essays absorbing for those interested in cultural studies as well as art history and gender studies. Abigail Solomon-Godeau is Professor Emerita of the Department of History of Art and Architecture at the University of California, Santa Barbara, and the author of several books, including Photography at the Dock: Essays on Photographic History, Institutions, and Practices ; Male Trouble: A Crisis in Representation ; Rosemary Laing ; Chair à canons: Photographie, discours, féminisme ; and coauthor of Birgit Jürgenssen . Sarah Parsons is Associate Professor of Art History at York University.
