CHOICE Review

Corporations have been way ahead of academia in addressing the needs for managing the diversity of the American work force. This volume by Loden (Feminine Leadership Or, How To Succeed in Business Without Being One of the Boys, 1985) and Rosener (University of California at Irvine) is both a resource for academia and a handbook for managers. Unlike many other books in this area that only focus on one issue such as gender (e.g., Gary N. Powell, Women & Men in Management, CH, Dec'88), or race (George Davis and Glegg Watson, Black Life in Corporate America, CH, Feb'83), this work discusses six dimensions of diversity: age, ethnicity, gender, physical abilities/qualities, race, and sexual/affectional orientation. The argument is made in Part 1 that people in all these diverse groups must be valued if American corporations are to remain competitive. Part 2 focuses on skills and awareness that individual managers must have to manage diversity successfully, and Part 3 addresses organizational approaches to fully utilizing the skills of diverse employees. Although the practical advice offered is somewhat general, the book is very clearly written and has excellent chapter notes and a substantial annotated bibliography. Recommended for public and academic library collections, particularly at the community college and lower-division levels. -J. A. Neal, University of New Haven
