CHOICE Review

Essential for courses on Western civilization or literature, this volume provides a wealth of information about the Latin authors students struggle with. Although there is no chronological guide, an introductory essay outlines the history of Latin literature and of Roman civilization from the Republican period through late antiquity. There is also an interpretive essay, "The Uniqueness of Latin Literature." Each entry, Accius to Vitruvius, consists of a list of major works, authoritative editions in Latin, translations into English, and commentaries. A biographical sketch presents the author's family background, place of birth, locations where he worked, and historical background. Illustrations include reproductions of manuscript title pages and portraits. The 45 authors include major figures like Cicero, Livy, Ovid, and Virgil, and lesser-known ones like Ennius, Lucan, and Apuleis. Useful for secondary school, college, and public libraries. L. J. Roccos; CUNY College of Staten Island
