School Library Journal Review

Gr 3-4‘During the course of this brief book, Sam Houston Bailey (a.k.a. Bubba) lives through three years during which he has a fight with a classmate, is saddened by his beloved grandfather's death, is upset when his widowed mother starts to date, becomes interested in a girl, embarrasses the same girl in public, decides he doesn't want to be called Bubba, and discovers a magic Farkleberry bush that instantly solves his problems and makes everything just fine. Whew! If real life proceeded at such a breakneck pace, none of us could keep up. Superficial characterization, a thin plot, and a lack of any detail whatsoever make this a book to pass on. The black-and-white illustrations do little to clarify the time or place. The Texas setting is not realized sufficiently for the story to be of local interest.‘Lisa Smith, Lindenhurst Memorial Library, NY (c) Copyright 2010.
