Library Journal Review

Dienhart and Curnutt, philosophy professors at St. Cloud University, MN, have assembled a compendium on business ethics that also serves as a textbook. They do a credible job on the philosophical underpinnings and how law enters into the equation. But while ethical issues have long been a part of doing business, in the post-Woodstock era business ethics have become secularized and mainstream‘no longer the province of philosophers or lawyers. From an academic perspective, the book provides a source of detailed reference material. Other notable features are the inclusion of films that address contemporary business issues, as well as a who's who that points out a deficiency: virtually all practitioners of business ethics are in academic or legal settings. Where are the corporate representatives? Another problem is that the book is oriented toward the past. Ethical problems are far knottier now, when there are no precedents for judging the likes of Michael Milken and Bill Gates. Recommended for general and academic collections.‘Steven Silkunas, Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority, Philadelphia (c) Copyright 2010. CHOICE Review

This handbook provides wide-ranging analysis and coverage of the literature, case studies, legal materials, and media resources in the field of business ethics. The authors (widely published philosophy professors) present a diffuse theoretical framework, followed by broad, extensive chapters on four major topics--the consumer, the corporation, the employee, and the environment. The four topic chapters integrate ethics, economics, and law to provide necessary multidisciplinary coverage. Specific subtopics addressed include corporate social responsibility, advertising, product safety, mergers, affirmative action, sexual harassment, whistle-blowing, and environmental economics. The volume's value is increased by the inclusion of a selective guide to both educational and commercial entertainment films; this guide contains lengthy annotations that will help faculty carefully select films that can generate effective class discussion and involvement. There are also biographical sketches of more than 40 major scholars in the field, and the selection of scholars is admirably up-to-date and diverse. A compilation of business organizations/associations and a useful glossary complete the volume. For students, this is valuable reference and research resource that supplements standard texts, especially for identifying key publications, case law, and federal regulations. For faculty, this volume is a useful research handbook and a highly effective resource for curriculum development at all academic levels. J. A. Adams-Volpe; SUNY at Buffalo
