CHOICE Review

Absolutely essential to any study of the Paris Peace Conference (1919) are the notes of the translator for the Council of Four, Paul Mantoux. Originally published in French in 1955, they contain the only record of the first 18 meetings of the Council of Four before a secretary began to take regular notes. For various reasons, Mantoux's notes are the only record for more than a dozen additional sessions in which Woodrow Wilson, Georges Clemenceau, David Lloyd George, and the Italians (before they walked out of the conference) tried to decide the destiny of Germany and of the world. The translation provided is excellent; it reproduces the tone of the original, which is possible thanks to the excellence of Mantoux's work. This book is recommended for any research, from undergraduate to faculty level, on the Paris Peace Conference or on the questions with which it dealt. Notes and a new index much better than that in the French edition make this English translation easy to use. B. Lowry; University of North Texas
