School Library Journal Review

Gr 1-5-- This companion volume to The Diane Goode Book of American Folk Tales & Songs (Dutton, 1989) pays homage to the silly oafs and lovable fools of the folk world. Here, she offers classics such as ``Master of All Masters'' and ``The Cooking Pot,'' as well as lesser-known tales. Songs include the ever-popular ``On Top of Spaghetti'' and ``Michael Finnegan.'' The retellings are bare-bones versions of the stories that retain the flavor and authenticity of the originals, while being accessible to young children. Appended source notes list the tales' origins, as well as brief background information. As in the earlier collection, Goode's illustrations are crisp, playful line-and-wash paintings that clearly celebrate the comic tone of the text. Each page is framed by a colorful border with a different folk motif. The combination of selection and effective presentation makes this an appealing choice for reading aloud or group sharing. --Heide Piehler, Shorewood Public Library, WI (c) Copyright 2010.
