CHOICE Review

A collection of writings on Wallace Stevens, which contains a 26-page introductory essay by the two editors; 14 reviews of Stevens's works, presented here in the order of their publication; and 13 extended essays by various notable critics of Stevens. The introductory essay, which surveys the reviews and the formal essays, is very thorough and well written; it is, therefore, a distinct help to anyone desiring an overview of the great scope of critical writing on the poet. Among the reviewers are R.P. Blackmur, Louis L. Martz, Frank Kermode, Randall Jarrell, and Irving Howe. Northrop Frye's "The Realistic Oriole: A Study of Wallace Stevens" (1960) is the opening selection of formal criticism in this book. It is followed by a dozen essays by H. Bloom, J.H. Miller, F. Lentricchia, J.W. Riddel, and Eleanor Cook. The last two essays, by Claudia Yukman and Paul Douglass, were written especially for this volume. This collection on Stevens should function well as either a college or graduate-school aid to students of this eminent poet, but it should also do well for the general reader looking for a greater insight into Stevens. -J.
