CHOICE Review

This book can be recommended only with reservations, since all but 60 pages of it are readily accessible elsewhere. Besides, the bibliographic introduction is brief, and three of the four previously unpublished essays, though interesting enough, are heavily biographical-historical and provide no major addition to Hawthorne studies. The intended audience for this volume is likewise a question mark. Novice readers are better served by the superb new study in the Twayne series by Nina Baym, The Scarlet Letter: A Reading (CH, Feb '87) or even by the Norton critical edition of the novel, ed. by Sculley Bradley et al. (1961), which contains not only much textual and source material, but the text in question besides. If one is looking instead for a recent sampling of criticism, there is the collection, New Essays on The Scarlet Letter, ed. by Michael Colacurcio (1985). Serious scholars of course are more likely to turn to the full-length studies of Hawthorne. After a century or so of benign neglect, it appears that classic American literature has generated almost enough commentary to sink library budgets, if not the works themselves. The volume under review is for the library with exhaustive holdings in American literature. -S. R. Graham, Nazareth College of Rochester
