CHOICE Review

Olson's book consists of 356 pages of short, alphabetically arranged cross-indexed entries about the 1920s, most between a quarter and a half page long. They include names of people, legislative acts, treaties, social movements, organizations, ideas, and social and political events. The entries are broad in scope and well written, and Olson quickly communicates the historical importance of his topics. There are a general bibliography, one or two citations after each entry, a chronology of the 1920s, and an index. Although this dictionary includes some of the lesser-known figures of the 1920s and much valuable information about popular culture, most of its material can be found in other reference sources--e.g., Encyclopedia of American History, edited by Richard B. Morris (6th ed., 1982). Recommended for graduate libraries of American history and special collections. -M. Margolis, Herbert H. Lehman College, CUNY
