CHOICE Review

Cole's carefully prepared work brings together a large volume of material on the Civil War published in the last three decades. The author, recognized as a successful bibliographer, spent seven years compiling the entries and annotations. The 1,395 items are arranged alphabetically by author within subject categories. The organizational scheme is complemented by a detailed index providing access to titles and selected subjects. The author was advised by a leading Civil War historian, James I. Robertson Jr., who also wrote the volume's foreword. This is a meticulously researched reference work for serious Civil War scholars and for those looking for research opportunities. The human tragedy of the war is well covered. This volume shoud be in all academic libraries that support strong American history programs. It continues but does not replace three other prominent Civil War bibliographies: C.E. Dornbusch's Military Bibliography of the Civil War (3 v., 1961); E. Merton Coulter's Travels in the Confederate States: A Bibliography (1948); and Allan Nevins, James I. Robertson Jr., and Bell I. Wiley's Civil War Books: A Critical Bibliography (2 v., 1967). -C. V.
