CHOICE Review

This volume adds to a generally small body of literature on Chopin (1851-1904) and her work. Petry (Southern Illinois Univ.) makes available contemporary reviews of Chopin's At Fault, Bayou Folk, A Night in Acadie, and The Awakening, along with a biographical sketch of the author (1894). A selection of criticism before 1969 (year of publication of The Complete Works of Kate Chopin, edited by Per Seyersted, and Seyersted's critical biography Kate Chopin, CH, Sep'70) includes the important 1937 Commonweal essay on Chopin's stories by Joseph J. Reilly, in which he claims her national rather than regional importance, and Kenneth Eble's 1956 essay in Western Humanities Review, which became the basis for his introduction to the Capricorn edition of The Awakening (CH, Apr'65), the first signal of revived interest in Chopin in the US. Petry reprints seven influential essays published after 1969, including ones by Lawrence Thornton and Robert Arner addressing The Awakening and short fiction. Seven new essays, including those by Linda Wagner-Martin and Nancy A. Walker, are generally strong, but readers should be cautious about Margaret Bauer's conclusions despite her extraordinary research. Petry's introduction is especially helpful. Recommended for upper-division undergraduates through faculty. T. Bonner Jr.; Xavier University of Louisiana
