CHOICE Review

The 260 entries in this biographical dictionary are arranged first into fields of specialization, then alphabetically by name. Subjects are achievers in such areas as art, athletics, activism, business, fashion, leadership, performance, politics, religion, science, and writing. Entries begin with the woman's name (and any variations), dates, nationality, and areas of accomplishment. Written for general readers, the biographies are generally one and one-half to two pages in length and conclude with two to four suggestions for further reading. The criteria for inclusion result in breadth--over time, geography, and cultures--in each section, but also require a high degree of selectivity. The work includes some black-and-white photographs and portraits. A bibliography cites a number of women's biography sources published 1964-2000, noting especially those written for young adult readers. Two lists at the end of the book make possible browsing the names by country and by date of birth. The fairly extensive index includes subjects, names of literary works (fiction and nonfiction), names of organizations, and historical events. Recommended for public and undergraduate libraries. S.
