School Library Journal Review

Gr 5-8-This attractive volume provides brief biographies of the standard cast as well as of artists, writers, musicians, entertainers, scientists, scholars, activists, military leaders, entrepreneurs, and even cartoonist Matt Groening. Most of the entries are a half page in length and are accompanied by a black-and-white or color picture of the subject (although the entry for T. S. Eliot is illustrated with a photograph of the cast of Cats). The figures "were chosen to reflect the diversity of the American experience over the last five centuries." Several individuals receive a full page, such as Thomas Jefferson, Richard Nixon, Michael Jordan, Maya Lin, Toni Morrison, Sitting Bull, and Stephen Spielberg, but Keenan doesn't explain why they rate longer treatments. Most of the profiles emphasize the subject's accomplishments rather than personal details. Even if the information isn't exhaustive, the writing is certainly zippier than the average encyclopedia entry. Many of the women covered are also included in Keenan's Scholastic Encyclopedia of Women in the United States (Scholastic, 2002). The common entries in the two books appear to be basically the same, although there has been some rewriting and revision. The primary use for this book will be ready reference and as a browsing aid for that inevitable time when students are assigned to read a full-length biography and need to select a subject.-Sue Sherif, Alaska State Library, Anchorage (c) Copyright 2010.
