Reviews provided by Syndetics

A very readable overview of the American Revolutionary War in the South. This book is a good starting point for identifying secondary resources relating to southern aspects of the war. Many of these secondary sources were not very discriminating in using original accounts. There is a disconcerting misuse of military terminology (row/rank, envelope/envelopment, regiment/company, and shrapnel/grapeshot) as well as confusion regarding battle chronology and unit designations. The book seems to be written for a popular, nontechnical audience, although there are short sections with considerable detail. Critical readers would find Henry Lumpkin's From Savannah to Yorktown (CH, Feb'82) or John Pancake's This Destructive War (CH, Jul'85) more useful in terms of detail and accuracy and identification of primary source material. General readers; lower-division undergraduates. L. E. Babits; East Carolina University
