CHOICE Review

Intended as a complementary resource for courses on Renaissance poetry, this volume is an excellent guide to the large body of criticism on English poetry of the early modern period. While providing a rich appreciation for the literature, it also serves as a useful aid to further study and teaching. The editors organize the contents according to "authors and their works," and they discuss the most important figures of the period, from Wyatt and Surrey through Milton and Marvell, including some principal women writers. The book serves to familiarize students with some of the most renowned scholars in this field, both British and American, and with current academic discourse in "the important topics of recent critical inquiry," many of which here center on genre. Including more sophisticated readings than do some of the standard introductory companion texts, such as George Parfitt's English Poetry of the Seventeenth Century (1985), this book includes an extra thematic and generic table of contents, a select chronology (1503-1681), and endnotes and chapter reading lists that cite some of the most significant scholarly studies of recent years. ^BSumming Up: Highly recommended.
