CHOICE Review

Glasrud (emer., Sul Ross State Univ.) and Smallwood (emer., Oklahoma State Univ.) have assembled an excellent collection of articles chronicling elements of Texas black history of the 19th and 20th centuries. The volume begins with an informative introduction to the existing literature on black Texans. The well-balanced anthology continues with a thoughtful introduction preceding eight articles covering 19th-century topics, including slavery, the African American family, black cowboys, buffalo soldiers in west Texas, and black populism. Another interesting introduction precedes nine articles dealing with aspects of the 20th-century experience, including lynching, labor issues, African American urban culture in Texas, black baseball teams, and the Civil Rights Movement. Glasrud provides a useful 25-page selected bibliography of works on African Americans in Texas. Along with Alwyn Barr's Black Texans: A History of African Americans in Texas, 1528-1995 (1973), this book will serve as a good introduction for the study of black Texas history. Summing Up: Highly recommended. All levels/libraries. K. J. Volanto Collin County Community College District
