CHOICE Review

There have been numerous attempts to summarize the key elements of Judaism in one volume. The recent work by Robert M. Seltzer, Jewish People, Jewish Thought (CH, Dec '80) and the collection of essays edited by Arthur Green, Jewish Spirituality: From the Bible through the Middle Ages (CH, Oct '86), immediately come to mind. The present work is certainly one of the most interesting of these recent attempts. Here are 130 essays on virtually every aspect of Jewish belief: from aesthetics and apocalypse through metaphysics, mensch, and miracle, to woman, work, and zionism. The writers of these essays are important scholars representing the foremost among thoughtful and involved Jews. The essays, although short, are not simple, and they assume a familiarity with Jewish issues and sources. There is, however, a glossary of terms and a list of recommended readings at the end of each essay to help the uninitiated. It should also be noted that these are not encyclopedia entries such as one might find in Cecil Roth and Jeffrey Wigoder's The New Standard Jewish Encyclopedia (rev. ed., 1970). Each essay attempts to define the concept, gives us some sense of origin and development, and clearly embodies the authors' own perspective. The essays are challenging and will leave the reader not only more informed but considerably stimulated as well. Recommended for college, community college, and university libraries.-M.
