CHOICE Review

The Garlands' classic work remains an excellent point of departure for readers needing background on a particular author or period in German literature. The references are concise and accurate, providing a valuable snapshot of the content and historical setting for most major works. The titles and authors included are necessarily very limited, but they constitute a representative sample for basic reference purposes, and the work is admirably cross-indexed. Some important subjects, particularly those that have arisen in recent German literary criticism, are notable by their absence from the book: one such is Vergangenheitsbewaltigung in der Nachkriegsliteratur ("overcoming the past in postwar literature"), which is closely related to debates on German historical revisionism. The absence of two other features--a general periodization table as front or back matter, and an index of keywords--also detracts from the usefulness of the work. Nonetheless it in an indispensable reference tool for undergraduates and generalists with an interest in German literature, as well as an authoritative source for graduate students and specialists in the field. It is well bound and built to last, although wider inner margins would permit easier reading and photocopying. J. H. Spohrer; University of California, Berkeley
