CHOICE Review

One becomes painfully aware of the two senses of "critical" as one reads the new and previously published essays gathered here, the earliest dating from 1899. The earlier essays present Chesnutt as a "negro" who was able to write about his people because he is one of them, though his writing does not rise to the level of artistry of his white counterparts. Indeed, in some of the essays Chesnutt is "criticized" for daring to want to be accepted as a major contributor to US literature. His contemporaries--both black and white--viewed him in various ways: DuBois shunned him, Howells accepted and then rejected him, writers after the Black Arts Movement of the 1960s and '70s "reappraised" and "reappreciated" him. The three original essays included here seek to place Chesnutt firmly in the canon of US literature. According to McElrath, each of the new essays "offers a remarkably positive and perhaps surprising insight into just how sophisticated an author Charles W. Chesnutt was and suggests the need for future interpreters not to approach his prose fictions casually but with both the respectful and cautious attitudes requisite for analyzing the complex art of Herman Melville and Nathaniel Hawthorne."
