CHOICE Review

Christotainment is a markedly uneven anthology. C. M. Quail's essay on Christian toys, the collection's standout, offers a nuanced, theoretically sophisticated analysis worth the attention of any scholar in the field. S. Giagnoni's contribution on Christian rock is also a solid piece of work. M. Hoechsmann's and L. M. Trimble's chapters, on VeggieTales videos and Christian toys, respectively, provide intriguing accounts, but try to force their materials into the editors' analytic framework when, in fact, they challenge it. While C. S. Malott's essay on punk rock is interesting, it stretches the titular neologism to cover its seeming opposite, making the term incoherent and raising the question of why this essay appears in this collection. The essays on NASCAR and The Passion of the Christ offer nothing new to the conversation. The remaining essays--H. A. Giroux's afterword, the editors' contributions, and especially P. M. Anderson's on Christian rock--are superficial, overly general, condescending diatribes rather than scholarly analysis. Despite the strength of some essays, the weakness of others reduces the value of the collection as a whole. Summing Up: Not recommended. K. L. Brintnall University of North Carolina at Charlotte
