Machan is a well-respected professor (emer., Auburn Univ.; currently Chapman Univ.), journalist, and prolific author of books on philosophy, political economics, and business ethics, e.g., Primer on Business Ethics, coauthored with James Chesher (CH, Sep'03, 41-0230), and Morality and Work (2000). His timely new book, focusing on the ethical challenges involved in conducting business in a capitalistic system, discusses globalization; taxes and the role of government and governmental regulations; advertising and journalism; and employment and outsourcing. He presents a strong case for the positive role of business activity for the individual and society. Machan addresses the differences between utilitarianism and altruism and considers how these theories play out in the day-to-day conduct of business. Although the author expresses many personal opinions, his views and thoughts about these topics offer a perspective that adds value for students of business and ethics. Summing Up: Recommended. Graduate and research collections. G. Klinefelter Argosy University
