Buttazzo (Univ. of Pavia, Italy) and colleagues offer an interesting presentation and analysis of techniques used for this emerging class of time-sensitive systems in which the application tasks are allowed to have less stringent time constraints than in hard, real-time systems that are often safety-critical. Soft real-time systems are designed to reduce resource consumption, tolerate overloads, and adapt to system changes. They tend to be suited to novel real-time applications such as multimedia systems, monitoring apparatuses, telecommunication networks, mobile robotics, virtual reality, and interactive computer games. Chapters following the introduction of the basic terminology and an overview of the book treat the following topics: overload management, temporal protection, multithread applications, synchronization protocols, resource reclaiming, quality of service management, feedback scheduling, and stochastic scheduling. This book is highly recommended to professionals, researchers, and students working or interested in this area.
