CHOICE Review

The recent Abraham Lincoln bicentennial celebration offered US historians numerous opportunities to investigate the effect of Lincoln's personage on the lives and thoughts of Americans. Apparently lacking, however, were opportunities for scholars who specialized in other than US history to explore Lincoln's heritage in countries around the world. Lincoln scholar Carwardine, currently president of Corpus Christi College, Oxford, convinced the Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Commission, in conjunction with the Rothermere American Institute at Oxford University, to sponsor a 2009 conference at Oxford entitled "The Global Lincoln." Speakers covered the social and political impact Lincoln had on countries in Europe, Asia, Africa, and South America, as well as the southern US. This collection comprises 17 readable conference papers that open a new window into the Lincoln legacy and how it was used and changed to fit the needs of leaders and common people in other countries over the years. A unique addition to the body of Lincoln scholarship that will lead to further research in this somewhat neglected area of research. Summing Up: Recommended. Upper-division undergraduates and above. R. J. Havlik emeritus, University of Notre Dame
