CHOICE Review

By approaching women's health from a biopsychosocial perspective, Loue and Sajatovic have designed an encyclopedia suitable for both health professionals and general readers. The first section introduces women's health with a detailed examination of its history, women in health professions, the impact of work on women's health, and women's role in providing health care. The second section, alphabetically organized, addresses medicine, legal issues, history, beauty, and complementary and alternative approaches to health. Suggested readings end the entries along with lists of Internet sites. The editors are careful to distinguish women's needs in health and health care from those of men; entries from the second section include abdominal pain, alcohol use, body image, domestic violence, Marianismo (the observed behavior of Latina women in Latino society), neural tube defects, and pregnancy. Increased interest in women's health has given birth to many books, among them Jo Ann Rosenfeld's Handbook of Women's Health: An Evidence-Based Approach (CH, Jul'02; paperback ed., 2004) and her Women's Health in Mid-Life: A Primary Care Guide (2004). This encyclopedia meets the need for a comprehensive, up-to-date reference work that incorporates social awareness with clinical knowledge. ^BSumming Up: Highly recommended. All collections. J. M.
