Evans (Brasnose College, Oxford) and Pogge von Strandmann (University College, Oxford) have edited a valuable collection of public lectures given in Oxford, whose main focus is "upon the actual decisions of politicians and their immediate background in the public opinion and popular mood of those sultry July days" of 1914 that were followed by the outbreak of WW I. Contributions cover the controversial subject of the origin of WW I, and include discussion of Europe on the eve of the war (Howard); the Balkans (Zeman); the Habsburg Monarchy (Evans); Russia, an additional essay not delivered as a lecture in the series (Spring); Germany (Pogge von Strandman); France (Cobb); and Britain (Brock). All of the contributions are well written; some require considerable background knowledge of the subject and of the chronology of events. The collection as a whole provides an up-to-date historiographic survey or a critical analysis of the sources and literature for this extensively debated question. Full footnotes and helpful index. Upper-division undergraduates and above. -R. S. Fraser, University of Wisconsin--Eau Claire
