CHOICE Review

Reflecting an increase in mystery fiction published by women, two-thirds of the 90 entries in this second edition are for new writers not included in the 1994 edition, ed. by Kathleen Gregory Klein (CH, Feb'95, 32-3075). Remaining entries update writers who have continued to publish since the first edition. Each entry provides biographical information, discussion of major works and themes, a summary of critical reception, and a bibliography, including reviews and scholarly criticism when available. Unlike the earlier edition, entries are not signed. In 12 appendixes, Lindsay (Washington State Univ.) lists the series' character names and settings; type of detective or sleuth's occupation; writers who were already deceased in 1994, or who have died since the 1994 edition; major British and American awards, including both nominees and winners; and information about the Sisters in Crime organization. Due to different coverage, the two editions complement each other. For libraries that own Klein's original compilation, the new edition is a valuable update. For other collections, this new edition provides useful biobibliographic information on contemporary women mystery writers. Summing Up: Recommended. Lower-level undergraduates and above; general readers. N. Knipe emerita, Colorado College
