CHOICE Review

A skillful combination of empirical data and theoretical analysis mark this interesting and important study. Beginning with a chapter that sets the historical framework for a discussion of violent anti-lesbian/gay behavior, Comstock presents data on both victims and perpetrators. Although Comstock analyzes the data presented for both victims and perpetrators, he wisely focuses more attention on perpetrators. The actions of judges, testimony of witnesses, and comments of the perpetrators themselves help to place violence against lesbians and gay men in a larger social, cultural, and political context. Comstock effectively builds on this in his analytical chapter, "Understanding Anti-Gay/Lesbian Violence." The concluding chapter, "A Biblical Perspective" combines theology and social science in an attempt to further illuminate the problem. Although the combination of dry statistics and a theological orientation may not suit all readers, the book makes a valuable contribution to lesbian and gay studies and also provides critical information frequently missing from criminology texts.
