CHOICE Review

In this carefully delivered rendering, Peters (Univ. of Wisconsin-Madison) examines an important facet of the Catholic Left during the Vietnam War. Heavily influenced by liberation theology, the Berrigan brothers, Philip and Daniel, along with lesser-known figures (not all Catholic), conducted a series of operations designed to garner support for intensified opposition to US military engagement in Vietnam as well as to US backing for oppressive regimes in Central America and elsewhere. Homing in on the nine individuals who carried out a raid against a selective service office in Baltimore, Peters undertakes a broader sweep in examining various facets of the anti-draft movement associated with the Catholic Ultra Resistance. Fascinating is the unveiling of the personal and political experiences that shaped the Catonsville Nine, and the sometimes comedy of errors involved in the government's attempt to ferret those, like the Berrigans, who went underground. Pulling no punches, the author depicts the complexity of someone like Philip Berrigan, whose fervent commitment was shaded by egotism and by a sometimes less-than-complete devotion to pacifism. The accounts of various trials involving the Nine are riveting, on occasion. Summing Up: Recommended. General and academic libraries. R. C. Cottrell California State University, Chico
