CHOICE Review

Cooper et al. provide an authoritative, comprehensive, exceedingly readable compendium on quantitative and qualitative research methods used in psychology and allied behavioral, social, and health-sciences fields. The 37 chapters in volume 1 address philosophy, ethics, culture, research planning, observation, self-report techniques, projective and objective tests, chronometric and psychophysical measurement, neuroscience measures, and psychometrics. Volume 2 (36 chapters) focuses on qualitative research, thematic analysis, narrative and conversational analysis, ethnographic research, sampling, model building, experimental manipulation, single-participant studies, and neurological/biological psychology methods. Volume 3 (27 chapters) covers data screening, data description, single-outcome methods, outcomes over time, data-structural analyses, dyadic data analysis, data collected by others, and the publication process. All chapters are well written, and all provide an overview of what is known on the particular subject and identify relevant sources of important evolving trends. The clear cross-referencing captures the interrelationships among methodological subfields. Each chapter concludes with references, and volume 3 has a combined subject/author index. This set will become an indispensable resource for those in need of methodological guidance. Summing Up: Highly recommended. Upper-division undergraduates through faculty and professionals. G. C.
