CHOICE Review

The 50th anniversary of Brown v. Board of Education (1954) brought an outburst of scholarly activity related to the decision specifically and school integration generally. Typically, this work focused on national efforts and left relatively untouched the more specific and varied desegregation labors within individual states. This is unfortunate, since the Brown decision was to be implemented "with all deliberate speed"--a vague directive that facilitated a host of interpretations. Daugherity (Virginia Commonwealth Univ.) and Bolton (Univ. of North Carolina, Greensboro) address the relative dearth of scholarship on specific states' implementation fights in regard to Brown. Sound historical essays that cover Arkansas, North Carolina, Virginia, South Carolina, Georgia, Mississippi, Florida, Delaware, Missouri, Indiana, Wisconsin (specifically Milwaukee), and Nevada (specifically Las Vegas) generally focus on the 1950s-60s, and are accessible to undergraduate readers. Though some states (and cities) that have known histories of racial tension and/or an important place in educational history are absent, this collection covers significant ground by exploring various local and state approaches to desegregation. Summing Up: Recommended. Undergraduate libraries and above. J. R. Edwards Grove City College
