CHOICE Review

Thayer (special collections, North Carolina State Univ. Libraries) provides a historical and cultural account of greyhound racing in the US. She examines the beginnings of greyhound racing, from its origins in Britain (where it was known as coursing) to the present (and its clear demise). Tracing the rise and fall of greyhound racing, Thayer uses typical American historical themes--for example, economics, power, and politics. She manages to provide both sides of the debate surrounding greyhound racing, but finds the negative criticism prevails in today's dog-loving world--thus the disappearance of greyhound tracks, which were once numerous and active. Dog racing today is a fiercely contested sport, and Thayer's insightful historical examination of the sport as a once-lucrative industry makes a valuable contribution to the literatures of leisure activities, animal rights, and sports. Summing Up: Recommended. All readers. M. E. Beagle Berea College
