As the foreword notes, this valuable compendium of an extensive array of applications of fuzzy set theory emphasizes the practical applications of fuzzy logic, using fuzzy if-then rules. Applications of fuzzy logic in combination with other soft computing methods like neurocomputing and evolutionary computing are also included. Leondes (Univ. of California, Los Angeles) divides the material into seven sections, offering a broad indication of the book's contents: "Modeling Techniques," "System Control Methods and Applications," "Industrial, Manufacturing and Commercial Systems," "Adaptive Fuzzy Systems," "Image, Visual and Pattern Processing Systems," "Fuzzy Neural Systems," and "Implementation Techniques." With contributions by a large number of workers in the field, the set certainly fulfills its intended purpose of being "a significant research source for students, research workers, practitioners, computer scientists and others on the research scene." It most definitely belongs in the libraries of all institutions where teaching or research on fuzzy logic and its applications is conducted at any level. All levels of readers. R. Cornelius T. Leondes received his B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania and has held numerous positions in industrial and academic institutions. He is currently a Professor Emeritus at the University of California, Los Angeles. He has also served as the Boeing Professor at the University of Washington and as an adjunct professor at the University of California, San Diego. He is the author, editor, or co-author of more than 100 textbooks and handbooks and has published more than 200 technical papers. In addition, he has been a Guggenheim Fellow, Fulbright Research Scholar, IEEE Fellow, and a recipient of IEEE's Baker Prize Award and Barry Carlton Award.
